Alot of Comedies Arent Funny to Me Reddit

What happened to comedy movies? I swear there was a point from about 1999-2007 where banger after banger after banger came out.

How come we don't see movies like Happy Gilmore anymore? Step Brother? Harold and Kumar???

Movies just don't seem funny anymore. We are seriously seeing the death of these comedy movies in American cinema.

It is unprecedented and I honestly hope things change!

There are a few main factors:

  • Studios are moving away from mid-sized movies in favor of low-risk-high-reward ones, which are either a.) small movies with no major commitment or b.) big-budget movies with lots of star power that are likely to recoup their costs and then some.

  • Subsequently, streaming services filled the void for both standup and film comedians. It's kinda hard to sign a deal with Warner Bros. when you're already locked in a 5 film contract with Netflix.

  • A lot of actors who drove the 2000s comedies are starting to age out or move on. The 90s SNL alumni, the Frat Pack, and so on are all in their 50s and 60s now. Rogen & Franco are in their 40s, and producers like Apatow & McKay are starting to move in more serious directions.

level 2

Rogen is only 39 even though he's looked 39 since he was like 23

level 2

They also don't necessarily play well overseas and that's a big factor in getting anything financed or released.

level 2

Rogen and Franco have split up too so they will never work again together

level 2

But where is the new generation? All on streaming platforms?

In the 2010s movies (especially American made) began premiering internationally as opposed to just American box offices. This caused movies studios to plan production and earning potential based on international markets. Action movies (e.g Star Wars and Marvel) tend to be some culturally universal plot lines, the hero's journey and are often based on established franchises. Comedy on the other hand is harder to pull off on an international market. The concept of comedy and what is funny varies more between cultures. Comedy often relies on puns that tend to be language specific or cultural references specific to a country. Comedies are just inherently not as safe of an investment in an international market compared to action and established franchises. That's why so many movies are comic book heroes and reboots. Comedies (and also drama) are being released on streaming services making them a safer investment since it's more difficult for them to compete internationally.

level 2

This is a big factor in Mr. Bean's international success. The comedy is all physical, so it translates to different countries.

level 2

Do these international markets have equivalent but language-specific comedies of their own? Is there a Chinese Friends? A Brazilian Zoolander?

Moviegoers don't pay for comedies. This sub loves to blame "marketing" or the studios themselves but no one actually turns up to support them. I remember opening weekend discussions here about Popstar, Barb and Star, Hot Rod and others and no here had actually went out to watch them. Couple years later a lot of "Popstar is underrated!" posts spring up inevitably as a nice spin on "I didn't watch this for years because im lazy so I'll call it underrated." But the short answer is most people don't support comedies or indie films. They support Fast and Furious 27 and comic book movies.

level 2

This is all anecdotal, but I think it has to do with the cost of going to the movies. For my family of three to go see a movie plus concessions it's around a hundred bucks. So we generally only go for big tentpole movies. Occasionally I'll catch an afternoon matinee by myself or something but those are the exceptions.

level 2

I saw someone in this sub that said Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter was an underrated hit. I don't trust this sub.

level 2

For me personally I don't see an incentive to seeing a comedy in theaters. I don't feel like it adds anything to the experience. The sound, the picture quality, etc, does not amplify a comedy where the core quality is writing and delivery. And I don't like hearing dozens of people laughing over a joke to the point that it drowns out the next line delivery.

level 1

I feel same for romance movies.

level 1

No more dvd sales means movies have to make all their money in the theatres
